Replacing the spacer of the bridge VAZ 2107

Shank gland - one of the elements rear axle on VAZ-2107 cars. In general, it has a long service life, but improper installation, installation of low-quality parts, or wear can lead to leakage in the area of the shank of the drive gear of the gearbox. A malfunction is easily diagnosed if oil drops suddenly appear on the outer part of the gearbox housing.

If any, the shank gland needs to be replaced (see video below). If there are no drops, and the gearbox housing is covered with a thin oily film, then there is no need to install a new oil seal.

Please note that the replacement process requires certain qualifications from the performer. In case of gross errors, it may be necessary to disassemble and repair the gearbox, and this work is done only in a workshop.

How to remove the rear axle seal

To replace the shank gland on a VAZ-2107 car, stock up on a torque wrench and a two-jaw puller.

The algorithm of actions is as follows:

  1. Drive the VAZ-2107 to a place convenient for work (this can be a pit or overpass).
  2. Drain the lubricant from the rear axle.
  3. Separate cardan shaft from the drive gear flange.
  4. Raise the handbrake lever up to the limit. This ensures that the machine is fixed while the repair is being carried out.

Use a 24" socket wrench to loosen the retaining nut holding the shank flange. You can fix the flange without triggering the handbrake. To do this, thread the bolts into the holes of the drive gear flange. Then hold the flange to avoid twisting and use a tool (such as a spudger) to unscrew the flange retaining nut.

After that, do the following:

  1. Take a two-jaw puller and use it to press out the shank flange. Your task is to remove it from the splines of the drive gear. With luck, the part can be pulled off manually, without the use of a special tool.
  2. Dismantle the washer from the shank, as well as the flange with the dirt deflector.
  3. Pry off the oil seal with a screwdriver, then remove it from the gearbox housing.

How to install the rear axle oil seal

Now proceed directly to the replacement of the shank gland. Before installing a new part, check that there is no wear or corrosion on the cylindrical face of the flange (the one in contact with the stuffing box). If there are such problems, polishing work will be required. If a deep groove has formed on the surface, install the oil seal with a slight offset. This means that after pressing it in, it should protrude slightly in relation to the end part of the gearbox neck.

The procedure for installing a new liner gland is as follows:

  1. Treat the seat and the working edge of the part to be installed with grease.
  2. Press the seal into place. To do this, apply light blows with a hammer on the bushing of the required diameter, and if there is none, on the steel clip of the stuffing box itself.
  3. Replace the shank parts that were removed earlier. Replace the old self-locking nut holding the shank flange with a new one.
  4. Hang the rear of the machine, then remove the axle shafts from engagement with the differential gears.

Now take the bolts that are screwed into the shank flange hole and tighten the nut on the shank with a force of 120 Nm (use a torque wrench). After pulling to the correct torque, return the flange by hand. If everything is normal, the resistance to rotation should be negligible and uniform. If there are clicks or sticking, the gearbox will have to be repaired at a specialized service station.

Check the shank bearings for end play. If this is the case, increase the pulling torque by 20-30 N * m. Now check the part again for play and smooth rotation. If the problem cannot be fixed, then the gearbox needs to be repaired.
There are situations when, in the process of pulling the nut, the moment remains unchanged, and it is not possible to achieve the required indicator of 120 N * m. This fact signals the “drawdown” of the spacer sleeve and the need to replace it. To perform this work, you will have to disassemble the rear axle gearbox.

If the check was successful, the replacement of the shank gland can be considered completed.

Oil seals, they are also rubber cuffs, with proper installation and good quality, they have a fairly long service life, regardless of which element they protect. However, the realities are such that, in an effort to save money in one thing (on the purchase of original spare parts, timely filling of high-quality oil, etc.), motorists very often ruin the other, and rubber cuffs are often the other. Fortunately, they are inexpensive - many times cheaper than services for their replacement. Although the replacement itself is not difficult, the main thing is to find the time, place and stock up essential tool. Of course, it is not possible to talk about replacing all such elements in a car at once within one article, so now we will only consider replacing the oil seal of the VAZ 2107 rear axle gearbox.

Where is this seal located?

To be able to replace the rear axle gearbox oil seal, the first thing you need to do is find it. For this:

  • drive the car into a viewing hole, or even better - an overpass (work will be carried out under the car);
  • tighten the handbrake;
  • drain oil from the crankcase of the rear axle gearbox;

  • find the place where the driveline is attached to the rear flange.

It looks like this:

The blue arrow is here rear flange gearbox, green - one of the bolts for fastening the driveline (there are 4 such bolts in the mount), and the red arrow shows the lock nut for fastening the flange itself.

In order to finally get close to the stuffing box itself (it is shown in a small photo), this entire knot will need to be untwisted, and there the matter will remain small.

But more about that later, while we deal with another, no less important issue.

How to understand that the rubber cuff of the rear axle gearbox of the "seven" needs to be replaced?

By and large, it is possible to recognize the wear of the rear axle gearbox oil seal only visually and tactilely - by smudges (namely smudges, not fogging) of oil on the gearbox in the place where the rubber cuff is located. However, as practice shows, a rather small number of car owners notice such a breakdown in a timely manner (before the oil has completely drained out of the gearbox), therefore, most likely, slight vibrations and / or a strong hum in rear of the car while driving.

Be that as it may, if you find oil smudges on the gearbox, do not rush to immediately climb to the oil seal, in addition to it, a poorly screwed drain plug can lead to oil leakage, so first of all you should check its condition and a clogged breather. Too frequent replacement of the rubber cuff of the rear axle gearbox will tell you about the last breakdown. However, in order not to wait for these replacements and, accordingly, waste money, we recommend checking the breather for operability even before you start dealing with the stuffing box, in order to clean or replace it at the same time as the cuff, if necessary.

It is quite simple to do this: grab the breather, or rather, its cover, as shown in the photo, press and rotate it in different directions. This should come out easily, without any sticking, otherwise the breather also needs to be replaced. If the cover moves easily, and the oil in the gland area still oozes, dismantle the breather (to do this, twist the thread indicated by the arrow in photo 2 with a wrench) and thoroughly rinse it with carburetor cleaning fluid or gasoline, and then blow it with compressed air. Install the removed element in place, run in the repair of 30 kilometers, and then check the rear axle gearbox for leaks again. If it has a place to be - change the oil seal, and in the case of an early re-replacement - and the breather.

How to replace the rear axle gearbox oil seal VAZ 2107 with your own hands: step by step instructions.

  1. Fix the driveshaft with a screwdriver/spudger identical to the photo and unscrew the 4 bolts securing the driveline.

  1. Carefully hang, for example, on a rope to the muffler, the disconnected shaft.
  2. Determine the moment of resistance to the rotation of the drive gear (it will help you not make mistakes during assembly), this can be done in different ways.

Method number 1 - the most accurate - involves the use of a torque wrench or dynamometer and rope.

In the case of using the last tools, wind the rope around the flange in a couple of turns, as shown in the photo, and attach a dynamometer to its free end. Then start winding the rope, gradually pulling the device. As soon as the flange begins to rotate with the rope, pay attention to the readings of the device and write them down. After replacing the oil seal and installing everything in its place, this figure should remain unchanged.

If you have chosen a torque wrench as an assistant, make sure that its measurement range (scale) is at least 147 N cm (15 kgf cm), and start wrapping the flange fastening nut with it. The effort that you need to move it from its place is the right moment of resistance.

Method number 2 - useful for those who do not have any measuring equipment at hand, but there is a colored marker. All you need is to make 2 marks with it: the first on the nut, the second on the flange itself - as shown in the photo.

Pay attention to the mark of the nut - it must be made exactly from above, and not on the edges, otherwise, when unscrewing, it can simply be erased.

  1. Using a wrench and a socket head, unscrew the central fixing nut of the gearbox flange, but first the flange itself will have to be locked. The most convenient way to do this is with a homemade key made from a piece of pipe and two bolts (see photo).

IMPORTANT! When using marker marks to determine the moment of resistance, be sure to count how many full turns the nut will make relative to the flange until it is completely unscrewed. Suppose she made 15 such revolutions, which means that in the process of assembling this element, the nut will need to be tightened exactly 15 revolutions, and then simply combine its mark and the mark on the flange.

  1. Dismantle the flange (in the photo it is indicated by an arrow). of blue color) using a special puller (indicated by a red arrow in the photo) or a hammer and a wooden spacer (you can use a plank as it).
  2. Using any tool at hand (screwdriver, wrench, etc.), pry the oil seal and remove it from the mounting hole.

Thoroughly wipe the place where the rubber cuff was installed with a rag from dirt. So that you do everything right, we indicated with arrows the places where you need to wipe. The seal in this photo has already been cleaned.

  1. Take a new rubber cuff and grease its working surface (it is shown by an arrow) - the one that will enter the hole - with Litol-24 grease.

  1. Install the rear axle gearbox oil seal in its seat using a mandrel (it can be an ordinary metal pipe, an old bearing, etc.) of a suitable diameter.

The mandrel should rest exactly against the edge of the stuffing box: put the mandrel on the cuff and start hitting it until the latter is “drowned” to a depth of 1.7-2 millimeters from the end of the gearbox.

In this case, it is most convenient to check yourself with a caliper, although in the absence of such a simple ruler will do.

  1. Lubricate the working surface of the rubber cuff from the inside with clean oil, do the same with the flange. Firstly, additional lubrication in such parts is never superfluous, and secondly, this action will contribute to better pressing.
  2. Complete the replacement of the rear axle gearbox oil seal VAZ 2107 by installing all the previously removed parts in reverse order, but do not forget about the correct moment of resistance, otherwise you risk returning to repair very soon, but not the rubber cuff, but the gearbox, rear hub and a number of other details.

An oil seal, the old name for a rubber cuff, received its term when hemp, felt or felt, richly lubricated with lard and grease, served to seal the junction of the shaft in the housing in various mechanisms. And if an oil leak occurs, it is necessary on the VAZ 2107 to replace the gearbox oil seals in worn-out assemblies.

  • Currently, the stuffing box is a rubber part produced by factories for the production of such products, and is called a rubber reinforced cuff for shafts. Companies produce oil seals according to state standards, one of them is GOST 8752-79.
  • In addition to sealing the connection, the seals serve as protection for the nodes from the penetration of dust and moisture into them. Depending on the purpose, the products can be of different shapes and diameters.
  • The operating temperature range of oil seals is from minus 60 to plus 170 degrees.
  • Tire Type: Fluoroelastomer; silicone or nitrile rubber - determines the scope of the product.
  • The maximum pressure at which the seals are used is 0.05 MPa.
  • The working environment of their application can be: mineral oil, water, diesel fuel.
  • Types of reinforced cuffs:
  1. single-edged, serve to prevent liquid from flowing out of the device;
  2. single-edged with anther, additionally protect the mechanism from dust ingress inside.

By type of production, oil seals are:

  • reinforced with a molded edge;
  • reinforced with treated mechanically edge.

Replacement of oil seals

If an oil leak is detected in the nodes of the machine, it is necessary that the oil seals of the VAZ 2107 gearbox be replaced.

Replacing the cuff of the drive gear of the rear axle gearbox of a VAZ 2107 car

Rear axle failure due to oil leakage:

To replace the oil seal of the VAZ 2107 gearbox on its drive gear, you will need:

  • Wrenches on "13" and "24".
  • Screwdrivers.
  • Calipers.
  • torque wrench.
  • Dynamometer.
  • Mounting blade.
  • Durable cord.

Instructions for removing the cuff

So:

  • Replacing the oil seal in the VAZ 2107 gearbox begins with draining the oil from the crankcase mounted on the rear axle. After that, the plug on the oil drain hole is screwed back.
  • Both axle shafts are removed from the beam on the rear axle.
  • Four nuts are unscrewed and the bolts connecting the universal joint flange and the drive gear flange are removed. To fix the cardan (see) from turning, it must be held with a mounting blade.
  • Flanges are disconnected with a screwdriver.
  • A strong cord is wound around the flange of the drive gear. To do this, it is necessary to make several revolutions of the shaft.
Then, winding the cord with a dynamometer, check the moment of resistance when turning the drive gear. Its meaning is remembered.
This is very important when replacing the rear axle gearbox oil seal on the VAZ 2107
  • The nut holding the drive gear flange, which is fixed with a special wrench, is unscrewed and the flat washer is removed.

  • The flange is removed.
  • The drive gear oil seal is removed from the neck of the crankcase of the assembly, for which it is pryed off with a screwdriver.

Installing a new oil seal

So:

  • The seat is cleaned from traces of corrosion.
  • Litol-24 grease lubricates the working surfaces of the crankcase of the new cuff.
  • The stuffing box is put in place and through the mandrel with light blows of the hammer is pressed into the gearbox housing. Distortion of the stuffing box is not allowed.
The pressing depth is 1.7 - 2 mm from the end of the crankcase.

Tip: If there is no mandrel, you can use a suitable diameter, a piece of pipe or a defective bearing ring.

  • After the oil seal has been replaced on the VAZ 2107 gearbox, the drive gear flange and washer are installed.
  • The flange is held with a special key and the nut fixing it is wrapped. The tightening torque depends on the moment of resistance of the drive gear to turning, and is equal to 117 - 254 Nm.
It is necessary to start tightening from a lower torque, periodically checking the moment of resistance, the nut is tightened.

Tip: Exceeding the resistance moment of the drive gear when turning, indicates excessive deformation of the resulting spacer, which is installed between the bearings. In this case, the bushing needs to be replaced.
Why you need to disassemble the gearbox, adjust the gear engagement of the final drive. Repairs must be carried out using special tools and equipment.
It is better to do it in specialized workshops.

After the oil seal of the gearbox of the VAZ 2107 axle was replaced, the installation of the removed parts is done in the reverse order of removal.

Tip: The key that fixes the flange when tightening the nut can be made with your own hands from a pipe on which two bolts with nuts are attached, as shown in the photo.

Thus, the oil seal of the rear axle gearbox VAZ 2107 is replaced.

Replacement of an epiploon in a steering reducer

If an oil leak occurs in the steering gear, it is most likely that the steering gear oil seals of the VAZ 2107 need to be replaced.

Removing cuffs

Begin:

  • Oil is drained from the gearbox housing. To do this, the adjusting nut is unscrewed and the lock washer is removed.
  • The bolts holding the upper cover of the gearbox are unscrewed using the key to "13".
  • From the groove on the bipod shaft, the head of the adjusting screw is removed and the cover is removed.

Tip: If the gap between the shaft groove and the screw head increases by more than 0.05 mm, shims must be installed. The step of their installation is 0.025 mm, the thickness of the elements is 1.95 - 2.2 mm.

  • The bipod shaft with a roller installed on it is removed from the crankcase.
  • The bolts securing the worm shaft cover are unscrewed with a key to “13”.
  • Together with gaskets for adjusting ball bearings, the thickness of which is 0.1 - 0.15 mm, the cover is removed.
  • The worm shaft and bearing are knocked out of the gearbox housing with light blows of a soft metal hammer. There are special tracks for bearing balls at the ends of the worm.
  • Gently pry off and remove with a screwdriver the cuff of the worm shaft.

  • In a similar way, the cuff of the bipod shaft is removed.
  • The outer ring on the second bearing is knocked out with a bead.

  • IN diesel fuel or kerosene, all parts are washed.
  • The working surfaces of the worm and rollers are carefully checked for signs of wear, damage or scoring. Between the bronze bushings and the bipod shaft, the gap should be no more than 0.1 mm.
The surfaces of cages, rings and balls must be free of any damage or wear. The bearings must be free to rotate without binding.
Any cracks on the crankcase are not allowed. Damaged or worn parts are replaced with new ones.
Replacing the gearbox oil seals on the VAZ 2107 is always done.

Steering assembly

So:

  • Transmission oil lubricates all internal parts.
  • The inner bearing ring is pressed into the crankcase using a piece of pipe of a suitable diameter or a special tool that is used when replacing rubber-metal joints in the front suspension.
  • A separator with balls is inserted into the bearing ring.
  • The worm shaft is installed.
  • The cage of the external bearing is put on a shaft.
  • The outer ring is pressed in.
  • The cover with gaskets is installed.
  • The cuffs of the bipod and the worm shaft are pressed in, the working edges of which are previously lubricated with Litol-24 grease.
  • A worm is installed in the crankcase.
  • Using a set of shims, the moment of turning the worm is set at 2 - 5 kgf / cm.
  • The bipod shaft is installed, the engagement gap is adjusted. The moment of turning the shaft should be 7 - 9 kgf / cm when the worm shaft turns left and right by 30 degrees.
When turning all the way, it gradually decreases to 5 kgf / cm.
  • Carry out. Gear oil is poured into the crankcase up to the lower edge of the filling hole.

The replacement of the oil seal of the VAZ 2107 gearbox has been completed. In more detail, all the work to prevent leakage in the seals can be viewed on the video.
With timely diagnosis of the operation of the components of a VAZ 2107 car, the use of high-quality parts and lubricants, the car will be operated for a long time without a major overhaul, the price of which is much more than constant preventive care for it.
