Gasket for manifold vaz 2109. Removal, replacement, installation of exhaust manifold gasket

pad exhaust manifold is an important sealing element, on the serviceability of which the normal functioning of the collector depends. If the gasket is not replaced in time, the safety of the car operation is catastrophically reduced.

Some information about the exhaust manifold

This device, part of the exhaust system vehicle, it is necessary to remove exhaust gases from the cylinders into the common pipe. Also, the collector is intended to improve the process of filling the combustion chambers and their high-quality blowing. The exhaust manifold operates at high pressures and temperatures. They fix it in a rigid type on the cylinder head () and connect it to the exhaust pipe or to a special catalytic converter.

The gasket of interest to us is located between the cylinder head and the manifold. Its main task is to prevent exhaust gases from entering the engine compartment, which may well cause ignition of components and parts of the engine compartment.

The design of the exhaust manifold (it is made of stainless steel or cast iron with high heat resistance) is characterized by excellent strength. Repair of this unit of a modern car is extremely rare. Experts say that the collector can fail only when cracks form on its surface caused by moisture entering the hot metal.

But collector gaskets, unfortunately, are the weakest link in this reliable mechanism, accustomed to working in very difficult conditions. It is the gaskets that often fail the motorist. They have to be changed periodically both on cars with high mileage and on very “young” engines. In the second situation, premature wear of the gaskets may be due to the following reasons:

  • low quality seal;
  • intensive operation of the car in difficult road conditions (poor-quality highways, high mileage in a short time, and so on).

When does the manifold gasket need to be replaced?

Nowadays, sealing gaskets are made from pressed high-strength asbestos, which, moreover, is additionally reinforced with steel. But even such a reliable material over time does not withstand the loads that it has to face. And at one “wonderful” moment, the driver realizes that the gasket on the collector of his vehicle has burned out, which means that it must be immediately replaced with a new one.

How does an experienced driver determine gasket failure? Yes, very simple. The symptoms of its failure are as follows: in the cabin, the “aroma” of exhaust gases is noticeably audible; starts badly; an unpleasant characteristic sound is heard from under the hood of the car. As soon as a motorist encounters the above symptoms, he should immediately start checking the exhaust system for leaks.

And if the gasket is to blame for everything (it is not difficult to install a leak - soot appears in the place where gases break through), it must be changed immediately. See below for how to do this.

Exhaust manifold gasket replacement

The process of replacing the sealing element when it fails (the gasket burned out) is relatively simple. The scheme for dismantling the old and installing a new seal is as follows:

  • open the hood of the car;
  • remove the air intake and carburetor, under which the exhaust manifold is located;
  • we dismantle the thermal screen that closes the manifold (it may not be in old carburetor cars);
  • we unscrew the bolts with which the collector is attached to the distribution exhaust pipe, and then the bolts connecting it to the motor block.

Replacing the exhaust manifold gasket on a VAZ-2114 is a very complicated procedure and requires certain knowledge and experience. So, not all experienced motorists are able to do it right. In addition to the fact that exhaust gases exit through the exhaust manifold, it is also responsible for the normal operation of the engine, since a lambda probe is installed on it.

Since the gasket is located on the collector studs, the assembly will have to be completely dismantled to replace it. Of course, this operation will take a lot of time and effort.

Required replacement tool

Before proceeding directly to the process, it is necessary to determine the necessary tools. So, what is needed: a ratchet and heads for 17, 19; screwdrivers with flat and cross-shaped tips; a set of keys and the gasket itself.

Now that everything is prepared, you can proceed directly to work. In order for the manifold to be removed without any problems and rusted bolts do not create trouble, everything must be lubricated with WD-40 before performing operations. It is advisable to do this several times. Before you perform the operation, you need to think again, weigh everything and calculate your strength.

Step by step instructions (algorithm with photo)

If, nevertheless, the motorist decided, then consider step by step instructions for gasket replacement:

  1. We remove the "terminal-minus" from.

    Removing the terminal from the battery

  2. Dismantle the accelerator cable.
  3. We carry out the dismantling of fuel pipes. More precisely, they must be disconnected and taken aside.

As you can see, the exhaust manifolds pass at the same time and by and large - this is one gasket material.

Part selection

21083-1008081 – the original catalog number of the gasket for the intake and exhaust manifold. It consists of two parts or, on newer models, one. This part is produced at the AvtoVAZ plant. The average cost is 250 rubles per piece (if there are two of them) or 450 rubles (for a whole one).

In addition to the fact that there is an original part, you can also find a number of analogues that are recommended for installation. Consider which gaskets can be installed under the VAZ-2114 collectors:

  • Trialli GZ 102 0013- a well-known Russian manufacturer that produces a wide range of analog parts for domestic cars. The cost of the gasket is 200 rubles per piece.
  • AJUSA 13065200- Another domestic manufacturer that has won consumers over the quality of its products. The cost of the product is 450 rubles.
  • The Ukrainian company "Bogdan" also manufactures and delivers this gasket. But, if you look, the quality of the product leaves much to be desired, since the resource is designed for only 20,000 km.

Causes of the malfunction

Bent valves due to incorrect valve timing

When all processes are considered, you can go directly to determining the causes of the failure of the manifold gasket. So, let's look at the main ones:

  • Wear. During operation, the car emits hot gases that destroy the surface of the gasket, as a result of which it can tear or exfoliate.
  • Since there is one gasket for the intake and exhaust manifolds, gasoline entering through the first channel can get on the gasket, which also affects the integrity and structure of the material from which it is made.
  • The quality of the part is not always high, even the original one, so you should pay special attention to this when choosing.

findings

Replacing the exhaust manifold gasket on a VAZ-2114 engine is quite difficult and not easy, which can be a real test for many novice motorists. But, if you follow the instructions, then everything will work out. Well, if you can’t do it, then a direct path to a car service. Particular attention should be paid to the quality of the product so that you do not have to change the part after several thousand kilometers.

Symptoms: sucks air into the engine cylinders, a suction sound is heard from under the hood; exhaust fumes rush under the hood.

Possible reason: the seals of the inlet pipeline (collector) are worn out; Worn exhaust manifold seal.

Tools: a set of wrenches, a set of heads, a set of screwdrivers.

1. Install the car on a viewing hole or overpass.

2. Drain the engine cooling system.

3. Separate a final collector and a reception pipe of system of release of the fulfilled gases.

4. Remove the air filter housing from the vehicle.

5. Disconnect the choke drive link from the carburetor, and then disconnect the throttle drive cross link from it.

6. Remove the battery. This operation is optional, but recommended to improve access to other parts and fasteners.

7. Using a 13" socket wrench, unscrew the lower nut securing the air intake.

8. Using a socket wrench "on 13", unscrew the top nut securing the air intake, and then remove it from the car.

9. Remove the top nut securing the starter heat shield.

10. Using a socket wrench "13", unscrew the fixing nut of the eye, and then dismantle it.

11. Using a 13mm socket wrench, unscrew the nut securing the ground wire, and then remove this wire from the stud (the timing chain tensioner has been removed for better visibility).

12. Using a 10 wrench, unscrew the two nuts securing the coolant inlet pipe to the cooling system pump, and then disconnect the pipe. When reinstalling, replace with a new seal gasket for this joint.

13. Using a 13" socket wrench with extension, remove the seven nuts securing the intake manifold to the exhaust manifold. Please note that washers are installed under the nuts of the joint fastening of the intake and exhaust manifolds, the thickness of which is slightly larger than the others (the attachment points of the intake pipeline and exhaust manifold are shown in the attached photo).

14. Disconnect the intake manifold from the engine cylinder head by removing the first from the studs on the second. After that, take the collector to the side.

15. Remove the exhaust manifold from the engine head studs.

A good driver should service his car efficiently and in a timely manner, but at the same time always be prepared for the unexpected. Indeed, it is very difficult to control the condition of all components, parts and gaskets of the machine, which at any time can fail and cease to perform their functions. So, one of the most unpleasant "surprises" for motorists is damage to the exhaust manifold gasket.

Purpose and signs of replacement

The main task of the exhaust manifold gasket is to prevent the gas-air mixture from escaping from common system. As the material for the gasket, metal or asbestos-free paper is most often used. The reason for this foresight is the difficult working conditions, because the gasket has to withstand very high temperature conditions. Therefore, the materials used must have the appropriate properties.

Despite its reliability, this gasket often burns out. At the site of damage, exhaust gases escape, which rise up and seep through the slots in the hood. It is very difficult not to notice such a malfunction. In addition, the sound of the engine changes (it becomes louder).

In such a situation, it is enough to inspect the running engine. If exhaust leakage at the exhaust manifold junction is clearly noticeable, then the best course of action is to replace the gasket.

We change the exhaust manifold gasket VAZ-2109

I would like to note right away that this work cannot be called very difficult. But its minus is the volume and very significant time costs. So be prepared to set aside a few hours of your personal time. So, the algorithm of actions is as follows:

  1. Remove the air filter together with the casing. For this:

Unscrew the filter cover fastener (usually it is held on by one screw). If a nut is installed, then use the appropriate open-end or box wrench to unscrew;

Lift the lid and put it aside (you won't need it just yet);

Set aside the air filter;

Remove the body of the assembly (to do this, unscrew the four nuts) and also set it aside.

  1. Remove the car's carburetor. Here the procedure is slightly more complicated:

Prepare essential tool- open-end wrench on “13”, a few screwdrivers (it is desirable to have a flat and cross-shaped screwdriver on hand), a head on “8” (the deeper, the better), a ratchet handle and an extension cord;

Discard the commutation from the ECXX valve;

Remove fuel hoses. To do this, loosen the screws on the mounting clamps and pull the tubes;

Make a few turns of the two bolts of the suction cable;

Pull out the cable;

Remove the spring. To do this, it is enough to remove its hook from the damper control rod;

Make a few turns on the fixing nut screwed onto the bracket. This will allow the throttle cable to be pulled out;

Pry off the metal cable retainer (if your finger does not work, you can use a screwdriver);

Pull the cable, lower it and get it out of gear;

Discard the power plugs from the economizer screw sensor;

Remove the hoses connected to the carburetor heating unit;

Pull out the vacuum hose;

Dismantle the ventilation tube;

Unscrew the fastening nuts (there are four of them around the perimeter) and remove the carburetor to the side.

  1. Remove the exhaust manifold. For this:

Prepare a tool - an open-end wrench and a head for "13", a ratchet and a head for "10", an extension cord, a ratchet handle. You may also need a collar;

Remove the fixing nuts that fix the base located under the carburetor and bend it back;

Discard all hoses that are connected to the intake manifold;

Unscrew six fixing nuts;

Remove intake manifold.

  1. Now you can start dismantling, in fact, the exhaust manifold. Here the algorithm of actions is as follows:

Prepare a tool (the same as when removing the intake manifold);

Remove the four mounting nuts that secure the exhaust manifold and downpipe. If you can’t immediately twist the rusted nuts, use the life-saving WD-40;

Move the discarded "pants" a little to the side. To do this, it is enough to pull them off the hairpins;

Unscrew the remaining fixing nuts that hold the manifold (we already unscrewed six nuts when dismantling the intake manifold);

Dismantle the exhaust manifold (it should go without any problems);

Now you have reached the exhaust manifold gasket. If it is very stuck, you can gently pry off the edges with a knife, blade or screwdriver. After that, remove it from its "familiar place". The view that opens up to you is unlikely to be ideal, so you can’t do without additional processing;

Apply a cleaning spray to the place where the gasket was, wait a few minutes and clean the surface to perfect condition. If some parts cannot be removed, use a razor blade or fine sandpaper. As soon as you achieve the perfect gloss and cleanliness of the surface, work can be stopped;

Install a new gasket. At the same time, make sure that all the studs fall into place;

Return all previously dismantled equipment in reverse order. Pay special attention to the assembly of the carburetor (it is on it that beginners most often fall asleep);

Start the engine (after complete assembly) and check the quality of the work done.

Output

Believe me, replacing the exhaust manifold gasket on a VAZ-2109 is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. The work is voluminous, no doubt, but if you have a tool at hand and free time in reserve, you can handle everything. At the same time, the opportunity to save a little should warm the soul, because at the service station such work will cost at least 2000 rubles (a very tidy sum). So when the first signs of a malfunction appear, replace it without delay. Good luck.
